Positivity: Medicine or Myth? - A Retreat for Healthcare Professionals

This retreat is another program offered by the Point of Life Foundation in the spirit of igniting Hope in Healthcare. It aimed to bring together physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, therapists, chaplains, and practitioners from allied fields to explore and learn about the therapeutic scope of this simple tool – Positivity.  What and how real is it – to be positive? Integrated with presentations from experts in evidence based medicine and current research in ‘positive psychology,’ there was also opportunities to engage in discussion groups and experiential workshops with thoughtfully created exercises to consciously introduce the awareness of Positivity in our daily interactions.

This program objectives were to provide opportunities for participants to:

  •  Explore the emerging perspective from the developing field of ‘positive psychology’ with content experts and discover promising research outcomes that support positive clinical applications
  •  Examine the value of patients strengths and virtues on health and treatment outcomes
  •  Learn from other healthcare professionals as they discuss the role of positive emotions on  practitioner’s therapeutic presence and ability to create a positive healthcare environment
  •  Share personal stories on the meaning and impact of positivity in illness and death
  •  Experience practices that can transform negative situations and attitudes into those of optimism and hope
  • Participate in workshop exercises uniquely designed to promote values-based practice and to enhance positivity in life and work

The program was for continuing education units for physicians by the Westchester Academy of  Medicine and nurses by the Rhode Island Nurses Association.

Key Presenters included:

Harvey Zarren, M.D., Cardiologist in practice; Fellow of the American College of Cardiology; Founder and Physician Director of The Healing Connection, and Founder and Medical Director of the Healing Your Heart Program, NSMC/Union Hospital, Lynn, Massachusetts; Assistant Clinical Professor in Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine; President of the Board of the Integrative Medicine Alliance.

Paul Bueno de Mesquita, Ph.D.
, Professor of Psychology, the University of Rhode Island; Graduate Faculty and Director of Graduate Studies, Graduate Programs in School Psychology, University of Rhode Island; Consulting Faculty with the University Health Services Stress Prevention Initiative, Multicultural Center Diversity Program, and the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies.

Kala Iyengar, M.D., Board Certified Pediatrician by training, and a Spiritual Teacher by passion; Director, Peace Village Learning and Retreat Center, Haines Falls, New York; Founding Director of the Point of Life Foundation, working to bring increased awareness of the influence of spirituality on physical health and well-being; workshop facilitator and lecturer on topics related to stress reduction, meditation, self-awareness, self-empowerment, and values-based practice.
